Thelma Edell (Shepherd) Ponsler Gividen, 84, of Greenwood, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 8:20 a.m. at Regency Place in Greenwood. 

She was born on February 13, 1927 in Illinois the daughter of Grant and Lura (Roberson) Shepherd.  She was raised in Hartsville and graduated from Hope High School in 1946.  She retired from Columbus Regional Hospital after 20 years of service.  She was a member of the Wesleyan Church at Bradenton, Florida and member of the Riley Cancer Research for Children.  Her grandchildren thought of her as a great cook, good at sewing and a wonderful teacher. She enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, crocheting, quilting, swimming, walking, bicycling and line dancing.

Her 1st marriage was to Claude Ponsler, Jr. on January 17, 1947 and he preceded her in death in May 8, 1958. Her 2nd. Marriage was to Gerry W. Gividen at Alert, Indiana on August 16, 1966.  He preceded her in death on October 16, 1993. 

She is survived by sons, Dennis Dale (Ruth Ann) Ponsler of Greenwood and Darrell Eugene Ponsler, Sr. of Pierceton, Indiana; her sisters, Ruth Boyle and Maxine Howard both of Hartsville; her brother, Max (Mary Lou) Shepherd of Hartsville; 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; brother, Russell Shepherd and grandson, Aaron Dale Ponsler.  

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. David Burnett officiating. Burial will be at the Westport Cemetery.  Friends and family may call at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. 

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Riley Children’s Hospital.
