Fred W. Struben, Jr., 85, Westport, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 1:05 a.m. at the Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. He was born on February 1, 1926 in Nebraska, Indiana to Fredrick William and Flora (Lienhoop) Struben. He was born and raised in Jennings County. He moved to Connersville in 1947 and then moved back to Jennings County in 1982. He had worked at Philco Ford at Connersville. He attended the Bear Creek Baptist Church. He was a member of the VFW # 2021 at North Vernon and American Legion Post # 129 at Greensburg. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served during WW II. He enjoyed being a horseman, building homes and working with his backhoe.
His first marriage was to Dorothy Marie Fish on October 7, 1949 in Cincinnati, Ohio and she preceded him in death on August 11, 1978. His second marriage was to Joyce Ann Crawhorn on June 8, 1984 in Elizabethtown and she survives with daughters, Devonna (John) Simpson of LaRiberia, Mexico, Anna Kay (Bill) Nuesmeyer of St. Mary’s, Ohio, and Belinda (Joseph) Poe of Brookville, Ohio; step daughter, Suzie (John) Hofelich of Westport; sister, Kathleen Kaiser of North Vernon; cousin, Bill Rees of Franklin; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeff Struben; sister, Phyllis Utter; brothers, Robert Struben and Charles Struben.
The funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. Bob Estes and Rev. Connie Barr officiating. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Dale Cemetery at Connersville with Military Graveside Rites. A time of visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, the Amyloid Research Fund and the Hospice of South Central Indiana through the funeral home.
